aboard Animata--in a manner of speaking.
Disturbances, presences flicker within
your field of vision...but they remain hazy
and elusive, just out of sight.
Then you notice something else.
“Hm? Hey, To'toa's gone!”
“Wait, so they were after To'toa?!”
“She did say her friends were on the way, right?”
“This ain't good. If anything happens to her...”
“There'll be hell to pay, for sure.”
“We've got to get her back, no matter what!”

somewhere aboard this eerie...ship?”
“Aye. Except...we've just lost her signal. It's gone.”
Signs of To'toa's vital response have vanished.
The lizardfolk troops surrounding Animata
break into an uproar at this news. It's quite
understandable.
And amidst the confusion, they quite
understandably fail to notice the threat
sweeping in like a malignant tide.
Aboard Animata...
Like a receding tide, the hazy, formless creatures
flow out of the ship, one by one.
“They're outside! Follow them!”

Story
The turmoil outside the ship halts you in your tracks.
The air rings with angry bellows, screams,
the sound of something being crushed flat.
Lizardfolk are dying all around you, struck down
with faces frozen in terror and without time
even for death throes.
A desperate and bloody clash over To'toa is
unfolding between the lizardfolk and the
mysterious fiends.
“They need backup! Let's move!"
“Defend the lizardfolk! Get To'toa back!"

Story
The bodies of his fallen countrymen lie in heaps.
Pa'keppar alone narrowly escapes with his life.
“Is...is Lady To'toa safe?”
“Pa'keppar, listen. We had nothing to do with--”
“Save it for later. His wounds need attention first!”
No one knows quite how to explain To'toa's
abduction. You each open your mouth only to
close it again, at a loss over how to even begin.
But To'toa is well aware how desperately
everyone fought for her. She comes to a
swift decision on what must be done.
“I must...get home. If those invisible fiends attack,
our land is..."
“You'll never make it that far in your condition!"
“You expect me to stand silently by while my nation
is attacked?" Pa'keppar demands, voice rising.
“By the Maker, I'm begging you--"
He breaks off with a splutter as fresh blood
gushes from his body.
“...Let's go. Take him along.”
“But he's in no condition to--”
“His own life is the last thing on his mind right now.
He wants to protect his home.”
Pa'keppar smiles wordlessly, assent clear in his
expression.
A soft glow envelops him. The lizardman glances
down in astonishment, finding several of his
wounds healed.
“What's this?”
“At least let us patch you up a little. We can't
have you slowing us down, after all.”

Story
The lizardfolk nation...
The audience chamber is strewn with corpses.
They look as though they've been sucked dry,
souls and all. Nothing remains but shriveled
skin and bone.
Terror contorts the faces of the surviving
guardsmen, and sweat beads the forehead
of their bewildered leader.
A woman looks on with a sneer. Collecting
himself at last, the lizardfolk chief addresses
her tentatively.
“So, if...if we turn the outsiders over to you,
you'll leave us in peace?”
“Aye, you have my word. Should you stray
from my instructions, however...”
“If we should stray...?”
The woman's answering smile gleams like the
wicked edge of a scythe.
“Then I'll massacre every last one of you.
I'll start by tearing your beloved daughter
limb from limb--until she curses the day
she was born, and you along with it.”
Wildway, the lizardfolk planet...
Your party is en route to the lizardfolk capital
along with Pa'keppar.
“Energy depletion?”
“Aye, our nation runs on the energy we draw
from the land. But...”
“But it's started to run dry since the arrival
of those black Animatas, eh?”
“Which means To'toa isn't the only one in
danger if we don't deal with them soon.
They could doom the entire planet.”

Story
The lizardfolk capital is built into the side
of a valley, its buildings divided into multiple
strata and connected by an intricate network
of roads and bridges. It is a veritable web
of a city.
From the bottom of the valley gushes a
dazzling light. It casts a flickering glow upon
the city's towering structures and the clouds
drifting across the dark blue sky above.
Could this light be the energy of which
Pa'keppar spoke?
At the heart of the city stands a tower that
soars conspicuously higher than all the rest.
Pa'keppar points to it.
This is your destination, the palace of the
clan chief.
“Wha--! You intend to hand them over to
the enemy?” Pa'keppar exclaims.
His astonished words reverberate through the
great hall and fade into stupefied silence.
“Correct. An envoy from the black ships in
the sky said they'll leave us in peace if we
turn the outsiders over. We will comply
with that much.”
“But they've fought alongside us to rescue
Lady To'toa! They're comrades!”
“Then we must rely on their good offices
once more and send them as arranged
to ensure our continued security.”
“Even if they go, we've no guarantee the
enemy will really withdraw!”
“If you know of a better way to save this
country, do tell! Do you suggest we just keep
fighting until one side or the other is wiped out?”
Turning, the lizardfolk chief addresses you
in a ringing voice. His eyes betray something
akin to fear in their depths.
“Wayfaring strangers, you will go, won't you?
How you are connected to the black ships in
the sky, I know not. But you've fought to save
To'toa, and you've saved our countryman
Pa'keppar. As a token of our esteem for your
services, we will not drag you there by force.
We ask instead that you go of your own volition,
on your own two feet.”
Your party sets off for the designated place.

sharp as shards of shattered glass.
Malevolence has alighted here.
And it radiates something that
compels an instinctive response:
Fear. It courses through you until it
permeates every cell of your body.
“You're surrounded by thousands of ciphers
even now.”
“Ciphers?”
“I suppose mortals from this dimension
have trouble seeing them, though.”
“Dimension...? Who in the world are you?”
“Concepts are born without names, however
fond mortals may be of naming them later.
Let's see... I am the emptiness from which
strife is born. In an ancient cosmology,
that would be mu and toh. Call me Mutoh,
if you will.”
“Mutoh?”
“I quite detest strife, you know.”
“For someone who detests it, you sure
stir up a lot of it.”
Mutoh laughs. “Don't misunderstand me, now.”
“Trampling helpless creatures can hardly
be called battle or strife. It is conquest,
pure and simple--elegance without equal.”
“You have disturbing taste...”
“On the contrary, it's a virtue. Two sides
wounding each other in bloody conflict
is far more barbarous, don't you think?”
The tall woman who calls herself Mutoh
murmurs something in an unfamiliar language.
She vanishes with a cackle.

“We will not fall,” Ba'gunar bellows, voice
carrying clear across the battlefield.
“This is the land of our origin--our homeland.
We must keep it safe.”
You're already vastly outnumbered by your nigh
invisible foes. If you're surrounded, the odds
are clearly against you.
But Ba'gunar is hardly ready to give in to despair.
“So long as our home remains safe,
so do brethren who can carry on even
if we should fall. Pa'keppar will surely
take up our legacy. Our spirit will live on.”
Roused by this rallying cry, the lizardfolk
erupt into a cheer.
Suddenly, particles of light begin drifting up
from beneath the earth. Struck by moonlight,
they reflect it diffusely into a dazzling display.
And then...
“Hey, I can see them. I can see them now!”
The elusive ciphers are now plainly visible
to the naked eye.

“So we're even now?”
“Far from it. The best part is yet to come.
There's nothing more exquisite than the
crushing despair of defeat in those convinced
of certain victory.”
“You are a twisted one.”
“Me? You're hardly one to talk after
dreaming up those monstrosities for
the occasion...”
Everyone is giddy at the prospect of
impending victory.
It lightens the swords they brandish
and enhances the magic they wield.
They fight nimbly, agilely, as though
they've sprouted wings.
Little do they know that this battle
is but a prelude.
There are hundreds of them, thousands...
No, perhaps even more than that.
Monstrous fiends are appearing,
their ranks growing every minute.
Still, you must fight. The riftworlders,
those demons from another dimension,
will surely and utterly destroy this planet
if left to their own devices.
So fight you must. The fate of the
lizardfolk home world depends on it.
