“I wonder just how many souls are packed
aboard that flying casket...”
“Judging by the dynamic response,
it's positively teeming with potential hosts.”
“It's absurd, really, borrowing bodies of
flesh and blood...”
“I think I'll send them a little gift as a warm-up.
Let's wager on their odds of surviving it.”
“What the...? Where'd they come from?!”
Unfamiliar guests have appeared aboard Animata.
They soar on brilliantly colored, diaphanous wings,
resembling faeries of ancient folklore.

Story
The defeated intruders dissolve as though
made of shimmering sand.
But the hum of wings returns immediately.
More faeries appear, one after another.
The drone of wings grows deafening.
“Ugh, what a racket!
Palpa, Pepropé, what's going on?”
Animata of your home world assimilated Pepropé.
Animata of Planet Beastbait assimilated Palpa.
With the end of that epic battle, the two
Animatas became one. Palpa and Pepropé were
likewise linked, joining hands, heart, and soul.
Palpa replies first.
“I sense something like a pulse, a heartbeat, but...”
Then Pepropé interrupts, sensing
approaching danger:
“Something is surging up all around us.
There's nowhere to run!”

Story
At almost the exact moment the creatures appear,
Animata's navigation systems go haywire.
Pepropé curses, his voice resonating in your heads.
“Brace yourselves for an emergency landing!
Stay down!”
You brace for impact as the ship hurtles
toward a new planet...
Animata touches down with a violent shudder.
A hush falls over the ship as the shaking subsides.
The incessant drone of wings is gone.
The tension breaks like a dam, and suddenly
everyone is babbling, words flooding out in a
rush of relief.
“Persistent bastards. Why won't they
leave us alone? Ow...”
“Where are we? Don't tell me we've landed in
the middle of a bunch of hungry predators again...”
“The atmosphere is surprisingly similar to
that of our own planet. And there's no sign of
any gigantic alien beasts...yet.”
“In that case, I guess we can step outside
for a breather, right?”
“Now that's what I call a view...”
The world seems a boundless expanse of blue.
Tranquil waters stretch away to the horizon,
reflecting a cloudless cerulean sky. Not a
breath of wind ripples their glassy surface.
The mirror image is so flawless that the
boundary between heaven and earth blurs,
and you can hardly tell where one begins and
the other ends. It feels as though you're floating,
set adrift in that endless azure sky.
Everyone is admiring the surrounding view
when someone points skyward.
“Heads up, guys! We've got company...”
“What are those things? Could they be the ones
who attacked us earlier?”
“Say, don't they look an awful lot like...”
“...We just can't get away from Animatas, can we.”
“We'd better hide. Let's take cover somewhere,
shall we?”
“Aye, let's make like a tree and--”
But those persistent pixies are back,
barring your path.
They just don't give up.

Story
An imposing, elaborate structure comes into view.
The intricate workmanship gives the impression
of a highly sophisticated civilization.
Ducking inside, you manage to escape the
faeries' dogged pursuit at last.
As you venture deeper, it grows clear that
something significant awaits ahead. There are
even weapons stationed along the way to
guard it.
Whoever or whatever it is, you'll evidently be
meeting soon.

Story
You reach the end of the path.
A sprawling city stretches beyond.
Ba'gunar begins to tremble uncontrollably.
In a strained voice, he says:
“Why is this place so...familiar? I've never
been here before, surely. And yet I know it.”
He is not alone. Something primal and instinctive
is stirring within the other lizardfolk as well.
Tears well in their eyes and fall in large drops.
“This place, it's...”
“...our home.”
A warning cry abruptly splits the air:
“Enemy attack!!”
The sonorous blast of a horn follows,
rolling across the land in a resounding
alarm and call to arms.
From the city gates, armed lizardfolk
spill out with weapons at the ready.
And in the sky overhead, those all too
familiar faeries are approaching...

“Blimey, what's this? Kinsmen?! Don't recall
seeing you round here before, though...
Who are you?”
A lizardman who appears to be the captain
of the guard rakes you with a dubious stare.
But then he straightens up with a start.
“Er, apologies. Took you for hostiles, you
being armed strangers and all. But we ought
to be thanking you, considering you took
care of those winged spooks for us.”
He introduces himself as Pa'keppar.
Despite his rough and gruff exterior,
he turns out to be quite chatty.
“So the clan chief's daughter is missing?”
“Aye,” Pa'keppar replies. “Lady To'toa is a
real handful. No telling what trouble she'll
get into if we don't bring her back soon.”
As he speaks, Pa'keppar adjusts his arms and
armor with a practiced hand, piece by piece.
A scream shatters the air.
“A girl's voice! And it's close!”
“Lady To'toa?! Oh, no...”
Looking grim, Pa'keppar sprints off in the
direction of the voice.

Story
“Not again, my lady...”
The lizardfolk girl called To'toa pays no heed
to Pa'keppar's reproachful tone.
“I heard a sound,” she says breathlessly.
“It's the Maker's heartbeat, I'm sure of it!”
Pa'keppar's shoulders slump in exasperation.
“What in the world are you talking about?”
Any way you look at it, they're unmistakably
lizardfolk.
The gleaming scales, the wide mouths
tautly upturned in perpetual grins,
the singular hats and helms--
all are distinctly unique to the lizardfolk.
Crossing paths with them on such a remote
planet was unexpected, to say the least.
Face to face with the land and people of their
roots, your lizardfolk comrades feel a glimmer
of hope and a curious restlessness in the air.
“Won't you join us at the palace? We'd like to
express our gratitude, and I'm most anxious
for you to meet our chief--”
To'toa interrupts Pa'keppar's gracious
invitation in a burst of excitement.
“There it is again! That sound! I can hear it!”
She turns about slowly and stops, focusing
intently in a certain direction.
She is quite clearly staring toward the place
you left Animata.
“Everyone... Hurry back. Please...”
It's Pepropé. But his voice is strangely,
terribly hoarse.
“Someone has...invaded...our conscious--”
His voice abruptly cuts out.
“Sorry, Pa'keppar, we've got to run!”
“What? Where to?”
But your party has already raced off,
leaving To'toa and Pa'keppar behind.

As always, the faeries are speaking in tongues,
their murmurs unintelligible to you.
“What the heck are they saying?”
Then a new faerie descends, larger than
the others. She is strikingly beautiful, but her
piercing gaze chills you to the bone, for it
burns with a cold and deadly wrath.
- [Battle here]
The moment the raging faerie falls, the faces
of the others soften into genial expressions.
They all stop fighting.
Pepropé's voice reaches you almost
simultaneously.
“It seems our assailants are no ordinary
creatures...”
“Pepropé! Are you all right?”
“Of course. More importantly, we now
understand the true nature of our adversaries.
Come back and we'll explain.”
“Riftworlders? From the fifth dimension?”
“Aye, they were apparently in control of
the faeries you were fighting earlier.”
“How do you know?”
“The faeries share a collective consciousness
and have abandoned speech for the most part.
They shared that network with us, too.”
“Wow. Nothing is impossible for you, is it?
Say, Palpa, I think the faeries were saying
something earlier. What in the world was it?”
“They were very grateful. Apparently a
certain someone was forcing them to kill,
treating them as playthings.”
“A certain someone?”
“The riftworlders,” says Pepropé.
“They're evidently fiends who've acquired
Animatas, just as we have.”
Just then, an unexpected voice cuts in.
“Who exactly are you all?”
Turning, you find To'toa standing there,
studying you with a penetrating gaze.
“Cat's out of the bag already?”
“I'm the one who let it slip. It's a pretty dull
game if we're holding all the cards, wouldn't
you say?”
“So long as you don't throw the game and
all the winnings with it.”
“You seem rather peeved.”
“Can you blame me? Would you be happy if
someone was having all the fun with your toys?
It's my turn now.”
