Before Battle 1 Edit

Vengeful Heart

There's a thin line between tears of sadness
and tears of anger.

But as they say, the long way around is
the short way home. Tears inflate hatred
and despair to the maximum... and then
drain it all away.

There once was a Scarlet Kingdom, blessed
with power and passion by the Scarlet Staff.

There once was an Azure Kingdom, imbued
with power and peace by the Azure Staff.

These powers were inherited from the
underworld, but in this day and age,
the Staves are worshipped as holy
instruments that saved humanity from
extinction.

This is but one page of the chaos and
order surrounding the Staves.

Clara, a girl whose life has been painted over
with hatred.

Although she lost her mother at an early age,
her childhood spent with a caring father and
an older brother was a happy one. However,
this colorful life came to a sudden end.

Her father was a war general, and her brother
soon won a name for himself as well... but these
two men whom Clara loved so much were
deemed traitors to their country and executed.

But they were kind, righteous, proud soldiers...
How could they have committed such atrocious
acts?

As suspicion grew in her young heart, her doubts
turned to burning anger.
"Why does the world have to take everything
from me?"
Her question went unanswered.

Before Battle 2A Edit

Clara knew full well that her desire for
revenge was an indication of a tainted soul.

Going down this path, she stood to gain
nothing. It wasn't right to base one's
judgments on instinct and emotion.

Everything in the adults' world follows a
logical order, based on wisdom and foresight.

She accepted that as the truth, yet flames
of fury demanding revenge still burned in
her heart.

Flames strong enough to rage even in an
empty void, burning anyone to ash.

Everyone is swaying to the court musicians'
melodies, the women gowned in gorgeous
fabrics, the men clad in heavy armor.

This is my moment.

Wearing a sparkling dress woven with
magical fabric further amplifying its
radiance, I walk into the ballroom, this
temple of vanity, acting as if I'm lost...

Sir Urai, a knight who served under my
father Jainus, is here smiling faintly and
shaking his hips in rhythm with the music.

He must have been there at that time...
By what right does he get to live like this,
while my family is dead?

When Princess Senala had gone to the
Azure Kingdom to establish a peace
treaty and was assassinated, he too was
there, with my father and brother.

In the end, my family was charged with
plotting the assassination, and executed
as traitors to their country, all thanks to
Sir Urai's testimony.

Even though they would never do
something so foolish!

Sir Urai... If you're the only one besides
my family who walked out from that scene
of carnage, then that makes the answer
quite simple.

You must be the one who killed Princess
Senala.

Then you waltzed back home and pinned
it all on my father and brother... wounding
their honor...

"Urai... I will end you, right here and now..."

Before Battle 4A Edit

To Urai, death was salvation. Finally, he
could let go of the darkness plaguing his
heart. Finally, he would be freed of this
unbearable suffering.

Urai spoke, eyes unseeing.

"It's finally over... Now I'm free..."

"Free...? You won't admit your crimes,
even at the end?!"

"General Jainus... Please forgive me..."

"Urai...?"
Mortally wounded Urai's gaze floundered.

"Oh, General... Sorry it took so long...
I wanted to... go with you..."

Urai's words cut off there. A soft smile
lingered on his face.

Zel, the king of Scarlet Kingdom, spoke to
his troops in a booming voice. It carried
well, reaching each of the thousands of
soldiers gathered before him.

"Senala, my beloved daughter and your
beloved princess, has died. We entrusted
her with our hopes for peace and
reconciliation, placing such a huge burden
on her shoulders, and now she is gone and
will never smile again.

Where should I direct this unbearable
anger I feel?
Yes, the Azure Kingdom! They killed her!
In their greed for land expansion, in their
pointless quest for power, they chose to
toy with an innocent life.

Now I hear that the Azure Kingdom covets
our territory and has begun to train their
armies.

How much longer can we permit this
tyranny to continue? Not a moment longer,
I say! We of the Scarlet Kingdom must rise
against the enemy and fight them with
even more fury than ever before!

My comrades... I, the King of Scarlet
Kingdom, vow to the heaven and earth,
and to my countrymen praying for peace,
to bring justice and decency to the Azure
Kingdom by purging the scum from their
ranks!"

In sync with the King's roar, the soldiers
began to shout.

Amid the angry crowd, armor-clad Clara sat
astride her trusty wyvern.

She gazed up to the sky, her expression grim, eyes
betraying the strong emotions tugging at her soul.

The morning sun was rising. Its rays reached into
the deep valley, bathing the castle in bright sunlight.
It hurt my eyes, even through my helmet visor.

"If it wasn't Urai... then who...?"

Just then, they rang the gong signaling the start of
our march. A single file of soldiers marching
mechanically forward divided the land in two as
far as the eye could see. And then the ferocious
battle began.

The Scarlet soldiers surged forward like raging
waves. Clara was a beat too slow. Just then, she
heard someone whisper into her ear, clear as day.
"Have you no shame, traitor's kin?"
She really saw red at this insult.

Before Battle 4C Edit

"You get out of here."

A man appeared out of nowhere and
stopped Clara, his voice muffled by a mask.

Her sword arm faltered, and her eyes
widened in utter confusion.

Dagus? My older brother...?

It can't be. He's dead!

He was executed for assassinating
Princess Senala, along with my father...

...or so I was told.

"I'll take care of him. Now get out of here."

The masked man muttered flatly.
The air around them began to warp.
Was this some kind of magic?

Its ripples engulfed Sir Urai and the
masked man, and in a blink, they vanished.

"Big brother?"

Zel, the king of Scarlet Kingdom, spoke to
his troops in a booming voice. It carried
well, reaching each of the thousands of

She gazed up to the sky, her expression grim,

"Dagus..."

Clara whispered to herself. Sensing her mood,
her wyvern uttered a low, concerned growl.

Just then, they rang the gong signaling
the start of our march. A single file of
soldiers marching mechanically forward
divided the land in two as far as the eye
could see.
And then the ferocious battle began.

The Scarlet soldiers surged forward like
raging waves. Clara was a beat too slow.
Just then, she heard someone whisper
into her ear, clear as day.

"Have you no shame, traitor's kin?"

"What did you call me?"

So it wasn't the way I was told. My brother
hadn't been killed.

But then, why didn't he return home?

There must have been something extremely
important that he needed to do first,
before coming back, that he's still striving
to accomplish. Yes, that must be it.

In which case... what should I do now?

Before Battle 5A Edit

Clara was facing an enemy general.

It was General Kion, a centrist who was
once friends with her father back when
the countries were still on good terms.

"Clara...? Is that you...?"

Driven by fury, she had lost her reason
and was now only interested in utterly
crushing the enemy before her.

"You won't learn anything by letting
your anger control you..."

Clara's spear came to a stop.

"Don't let the Scarlet Mage pull wool
over your eyes. Ask your king about
your father— Gah!"

General Kion breathed his last.

Clara crept toward the King's tent.
She needed to know the truth.

She remembered what General Kion had
told her.

What was the Scarlet Mage plotting?
What did the King know...?

Lastly... Why did her father and brother
have to die?

Depending on his answer... she was
prepared to commit regicide.

The King's tent was right in front of her,
but there were no soldiers standing guard.

The king preferred to have loyal wargs
guard his person.

Before Battle 5C Edit

The hand holding the mask was unmistakably
her brother's.

She could recognize those slender fingers anywhere...
She remembered how when she was little, every
morning her brother would sit her in their sunlit
garden and deftly work out the seemingly-impossible
tangles in her hair as she watched with fascination.

"Big brother!"

Clara choked down the urge to run into his arms.
They were on a battlefield, and something told
her she shouldn't.
Not until she had accomplished everything
she needed to do.

But Clara couldn't hold it all in. The moment she
stepped forward, her brother seemed to sense it.
Smiling, he gently stopped her.
Clara gritted her teeth and turned her gaze back on
the brother she thought she'd lost.

His expression changed, and he spoke quietly.

"Princess Senala is alive."

For a moment, Clara couldn't process it.

"A body double took the fall in her place.
Father should be sheltering the princess
as we speak..."

Apparently, amid the confusion during the
peace parade, Dagus left to bring news of
Senala's safety back to their homeland. But
everything changed the moment he crossed
the border.

They said that Princess Senala was dead,
and he and their father were to be executed
as her murderers.

He had infiltrated the ball in order to
gather information on what was going on.

"Hence the mask?"
"Yes. The ball truly was a godsend.
But I never imagined I'd find you here."

"What about Urai?! Wasn't Urai the traitor?!"
"He's a fellow victim in this."

"But if it weren't for his testimony, you and Father...!"
"He was manipulated, and I had to be there for
his last moments. I needed to tell him I didn't
begrudge him, or else his soul wouldn't have
been able to pass on."

"...He died?"
"He was murdered by time-delay magical poison.
And only one person in this country could have
prepared such a sophisticated concoction."

"No..."
"Yes. The Scarlet Mage, Grand Minister Ella.
I must find her and ask her some questions."

The Scarlet Mage, Grand Minister Ella.
Her powers protected the country from
natural disasters, and could control
the weather to bring rain to the crops, all
for the benefit of the people. In addition,
she was also Princess Senala's mentor.

"You go meet the King. If he's the one who
wants this war..."

Just then, they heard a sound.
A guard was coming.

"Don't trust anyone. Trust only yourself."

With those words, Dagus disappeared
into the darkness.

Clara crept toward the King's tent.

Sleeping on the job... Neglect... Betrayal...
Human guards were capable of
being useless in the worst possible ways.

The king preferred to have loyal wargs
guard his person.

Before Battle 6A Edit

"Who goes there?"

She heard a voice from behind her.
Before she could even curse her
carelessness, she felt a sword at her
neck and froze.

"Oh...? Clara Nebraag, eh? State your
business."

The King sounded confident and in
control. But Clara was unfazed.

"I want to ask you about the deaths
of my father and brother...!"

Clara turned around and knocked away
the sword at her neck. Her defense was
flawless.

The clang of metal striking metal rang out
in the King's tent, alerting the nearby
armored guards, who came rushing to the
scene. They pointed their many spears at
Clara, the traitor.

Clara was forced to her knees, but the
fatal blow she expected did not come.

Before Clara could speak, the King
addressed her.

"You will be moved to the front lines.
There, you will join the suicide corps for
the siege."

"Suicide corps...?"

Clara looked up at Castle Azure towering
before her. It was an impregnable fortress.
It was surrounded by many layers of eerily
glowing force fields powered by the Azure
Staff.

But then a red energy barrier descended
as if to cancel it out. It was the power of
theScarlet Staff held by the powerful mage,
Grand Minister Ella.

Bolts of scarlet and azure struggled for
dominance, creating a super-charged
zone where certain death awaited.

It was a formidable clash of magic forces.

Before Battle 6C Edit

The King's bed was empty.

"Who goes there?"

She heard a voice from behind her. Before
she could even curse her carelessness,
she felt a sword at her neck and froze.

"Who are you?"

The King sounded confident and in control.
But Clara was unfazed.

"Are you aware that Princess Senala
is still alive?"

The King knitted his brows and, after
a moment of hesitation, opened his mouth
to speak.

"If you were anyone else, I would have
called you a liar... but you're a Nebraag. Tell me
everything you know! Where is Senala?"

Clara relayed the story Dagus had told her
and begged the King to call off the war.

But the King wasn't convinced... and maybe
his certainty wasn't necessary for the war
in the first place.

"The guards are coming. Leave. Now.
This conversation stays between us."

Clara slipped away into the darkness.
Once again, she was reminded of the
powerful ripples of war that dominated
all human reason.

Clara looked up at Castle Azure towering
before her. It was an impregnable fortress.
It was surrounded by many layers of eerily
glowing force fields powered by the Azure
Staff.

As the leader of the Scarlet Army, it was
Grand Minister Ella's duty to strip
the barrier down. The red force field turned
to fierce energy waves, which surged
at the castle.

The Scarlet Staff and Azure Staff.
These twin Staves from the underworld
were now locked in combat. The ghastly act
known as "war" was converting their
holy power into violence in an attempt to
spread bloodshed and death across the land.

Clara stood on the front lines, searching for
her brother Dagus. He must have talked to
Grand Minister Ella by now. But what did he
gain from it?

Before Battle 7A Edit

Scarlet Kingdom and Azure Kingdom: two
powerful countries, two halves of a whole.
Their prosperity can be linked to the power
of the twin staves from the underworld.

The Grand Minister of Scarlet Kingdom, a
great mage known as Ella, used the Scarlet
Staff to protect the country as well as to
bring needed rains for the crops.
The Scarlet Kingdom prospered.

She was a kind minister beloved to her
people.

However...
"Don't let the Scarlet Mage pull wool over
your eyes."

General Kion's last words replayed in
Clara's mind.

Perhaps Grand Minister Ella, commander of
the Scarlet Army, was the true enemy...

Grand Minister Ella called her name. Clara
looked up and met her gaze.

The woman's eyes looked sinister, but
also pure. Clara could feel something
strange coiling around her heart.

Her secret, burning lust for revenge was
gone. Only the faintest traces remained.

Ella's voice rang clear, carving itself into
Clara's mind.

"You must obtain the Azure Staff. It is
your duty, do you understand?"

Clara nodded.

Once the Scarlet Barrier and Azure Barrier
came into contact, they began to nullify
each other.

Both inside and outside the castle, the
Scarlet and Azure soldiers battled to slay
one another.

It was a gruesome scene of endless
pandemonium.

Clara stepped over corpses as she
hastened up the tower where the Staff
was said to be kept.

"You must obtain the Azure Staff. It is
your duty."

Those words rang in her head, spurring
her forward.

Before Battle 7C Edit

"Brother...?!"

Beyond the castle was an impossibly tall
tower. It was in this tower where the azure
force field was being generated that Clara
reunited with her elder brother Dagus.

"Follow me! We're going to take
the Azure Kingdom's staff!"

"Why would we do that?"

"Lady Ella's orders."

"What...?"

"Come on! Hurry!"

His roaring voice made Clara flinch, but
she had no choice but to accompany him.

The Scarlet and Azure barriers were now
at maximum force.

Both inside and outside the castle,
the Scarlet and Azure soldiers battled
to slay one another.

It was a gruesome scene of endless
pandemonium.

Clara followed Dagus up the tower
that was said to enshrine the Staff.

Before Battle 8A Edit

"This is it..."

At last, Clara had reached the Azure Staff.

She felt exultant as a sense of gratification
filled her.

She felt exultant as a sense of gratification
filled her.

When her fingers touched the Staff, Clara
felt a strange tingling sensation.

Just then, a sinister-looking bird flew in.
Its name was Sorrowvane.

The moment she caught sight of it,
Clara spat out a warning, her voice filled
with venom.

"Don't get in my way...!"

"Ooh... This is it...!"

Dagus and Clara had reached the Azure Staff.

Dagus spoke in a trembling voice as if facing
a most holy object. He extended his hand
to reach for the Staff.

Just then, a sinister-looking bird flew in.
Its name was Sorrowvane.

The moment he caught sight of it,
Dagus spat out a warning, his voice

Dagus and Clara had reached the Azure Staff.

Dagus spoke in a trembling voice as if facing

Just then, a sinister-looking bird flew in.

Ending A Edit

The Azure Staff looked like
it was on the verge of shattering.
Clara grasped it tightly.

"I got the Azure Staff!"

Energy poured forth out of the Staff and
into her body...

And then she threw herself off the tower.

Some time later...

A few had noticed that the wyvern-riding
girl with revenge in her heart was nowhere
to be seen.

But she was just another soul lost on
the battlefield, and no one paid any mind.

After his dramatic victory, King Zel of
the Scarlet Kingdom suddenly died.

Having lost their desire to continue, the
Scarlet Kingdom gave up on the war with
the ravaged Azure Kingdom. A peace treaty
was signed as fast as lightning, and the
world saw peace at last.

The citizens didn't suspect a thing, and
when a new leader rose to prominence,
they showered her with their praise and
devotion.

It was Queen Ella, armed with the two
magical Staves.

People would go on to describe her reign
as truly prosperous.

Residual Revenge

-The End-

Before Battle 9B Edit

The two Staves were unleashing all of their
force, shining with a blindingly bright light
as they overlapped, further amplifying their
power... When they met, the light formed
a spiral that rose to the heavens. The Azure
and Scarlet barriers were now reaching
a critical state.

The high-pitched cry of the winged familiar
pierced Clara's ears, and the girl was
released from Ella's mind control.

"What am I doing here...?"

Gradually, her eyes started to see clearly
again.

The state of the battlefield was growing
worse.

Blood was repaid in blood as lives were
reaped on both sides of the struggle.

The brutality of the past thousands of
years was unfolding anew.

"Brother, what's going on?!"

His eyes were blank and unfocused.

Holding the Staff, Dagus walked indifferently
to the railing, put his hand on it, and...
jumped off.

"BROTHER!!!"

sharp cry. The light returned to his eyes.

"What was I... doing...?"

The Scarlet Staff and Azure Staff.
Two tremendous powers. They collided,
struggled for dominance, filled with hatred,
until at last they each released a magic
strong enough to shatter the other.

There were no longer any protective barriers.
The state of the battlefield was growing
worse. Blood was repaid in blood as lives
were reaped on both sides of the struggle.

The brutality of the past thousands of years
was unfolding anew.

Before Battle 10B Edit

The Scarlet Kingdom had achieved victory,
but the war had taken massive tolls on
both countries.

As Clara stood amid the mountain rubble,
the bird familiar perched on her shoulder
and softly spoke the name of the Grand
Minister and Scarlet Mage, Ella.

"In the place where true blackness lies,
she awaits."

With the Azure Staff in hand, Clara headed
for the Pitch Caves.

Here were the Pitch Caves.

A monster den where people dared not
venture.

Pressing her hand against the cold rock
wall, Clara carefully worked her way
forward in the darkness.

This silent place helped her suppress
her anger and think back over everything
that had happened.

Before Battle 10C Edit

The Scarlet Kingdom had achieved victory,
but the war had taken massive tolls on both
countries.

As Clara stood amid the mountain of rubble,
a messenger approached and muttered:
"In the place where true blackness lies,
Senala of the Scarlet Kingdom awaits."

Clara couldn't think straight anymore.

She had lost her brother for a second time,
and it had left a gaping hole in her heart.

Here were the Pitch Caves.

A monster den where people dared not venture.

Pressing her hand against the cold rock wall,
Clara carefully worked her way forward
in the darkness.

The eerie silence of the cavern seemed to
coax out the suppressed grief in her heart.

She sobbed and sobbed. As her tears
kept flowing, her hatred and despair
reached their full intensity.

Before Battle 10D Edit

The Scarlet Kingdom had achieved victory,
but the war had taken massive tolls on both
countries.

Clara and Dagus stood before the
mountain of rubble, the foolishness of war
staring them right in the face.

Just then, a bird familiar flew down to them
with a message.

"In the place where true blackness lies,
Senala of the Scarlet Kingdom awaits."

"The place where true blackness lies..."

Pressing a hand against the cold rock wall,
Clara and Dagus carefully worked their way

The eerie silence of the cavern seemed to
coax out the suppressed grief in her heart.

Before Battle 11B Edit

Clara reached the deepest part of the cave.

"Princess Senala!"

Why? How? How are you still alive?

Clara couldn't understand a single thing.

Senala wore a daring grin, and behind her
stood Grand Minister Ella, chained and
lethargic.

"Clara Nebraag! I've been waiting for you."

"Princess Senala? What's going on?"

"Give me the Staff..."

Senala staggered over to Clara on unsteady
legs.

"Give me... the Staff..."

Clara saw a gray coil
deep within Senala's eyes.

"GIVE IT TO ME!!!"

Before Battle 11C Edit

There, amid the darkness,
there were two coffins.

And something was between them...

Clara squinted in the dark.

Then she recognized it as her brother's hand.
It was holding tightly onto something that was
hanging out of the other coffin.

Clara ran over. "Brother!"

Side by side lay the coffins of Dagus
and Senala. Even in death, they were
still holding hands.

Their eyes were shut tight, each lost to
an eternal slumber from which they would
never awaken.

That was when Clara realized that the
Scarlet Mage Ella was standing next to her.
The woman scoffed quietly.

"I cast the forbidden spell for them...
To grant each their wish after death."

Ella looked dismissively at their joined
hands.

"I certainly never expected THIS..."

X

"Your heart is already cold.
You will no longer feel resentment
nor grief..."

Ella's voice echoed through the cavern.

Clara's hatred and despair had been
drained away along with her tears.
Her massive grief had consumed everything.

Ella smiled.

"Now then, to the underworld with you."

Before Battle 11D Edit

In the deepest part of the cave,
they found Princess Senala lying lifelessly
in the darkness.

Dagus ran to her. "Princess Senala?!"

As he lifted her upright, Senala slowly
opened her eyes. "Dagus... I'm so glad to
see you again..."

X

"Father?!"

Dagus deflected the sword blow away
from Senala, shocked to see the assailant's
face.

"Father, why...?"

Clara stood next to Dagus, shielding Senala
and pointing her weapon at the attacker,
her own father.

"Out of my way! This is what Lady Ella
demands..."

Ending B Edit

Clara released Grand Minister Ella
from her shackles.

"Good work. This should help vindicate
the Nebraag family name."

Ella's voice echoed in the cavern.

...CLANK!

The chains fell to the ground, and
for some reason, the sound made Clara feel
like part of her heart had shattered.

Newly freed, Grand Minister Ella
stared deeply into Clara's eyes.
Her consciousness sank into blackness...

Ella stole the Azure Staff from Clara
and pulled the other staff that she had
been carrying.
Ella's eyes were dancing... Her booming
laughter echoed throughout the cavern.

Some time later...

girl with revenge in her heart was nowhere

A few had noticed that the wyvern-riding
girl with revenge in her heart was nowhere
to be seen.

But she was just another soul lost on
the battlefield, and no one paid any mind.

After his dramatic victory, King Zel of
the Scarlet Kingdom suddenly died.

Having lost their desire to continue, the
Scarlet Kingdom gave up on the war with
the ravaged Azure Kingdom. A peace
treaty was signed as fast as lightning, and
the world saw peace at last.

The citizens didn't suspect a thing, and
when a new leader rose to prominence,
they showered her with their praise and
devotion.

It was Queen Ella, armed with the two
magical Staves.

People would go on to describe her reign
as truly prosperous.

Before Battle 12D Edit

Dagus stood watching as Clara clung to
their father who had collapsed to the floor.

Grand Minister Ella appeared at their side
as if by magic.
"Ahh, filial love... How beautiful..."

She couldn't suppress her laughter.

"Honestly, don't you understand? Love is
merely an illusion that serves to produce
the next generation. Look at the future.
Then you'll realize how shallow your
motivations really are."

Ella's words got a reaction out of Senala.

"You have no right to talk about the future
if you can't even understand human sadness!"

Ella smiled, calm and collected.
Senala continued to scream at her.

"Why don't you understand?! Manipulation is
only false control! It's borne of your fear
and mistrust of yourself. A true heart would
never give in to something like that."

Ella's smile faded. Without a word,
she moved to attack the three of them.

Ending D Edit

You will... seize the future…

Two kingdoms. Two staves. Each staff was
said to hold the power to control even nature itself.

The wealth created by the staves easily changed
people's natures. Few were able to withstand the
allure of money and power when presented with it.
A society that blindly consumed all it saw...
Lost were kindness and compassion, and
greed-driven mankind became the greatest enemy
of the natural world. Thus, humanity had embarked
on a path to its own destruction.

The scarlet princess Senala was determined tackle
the problem at its root.

A war began, and meanwhile, not a soul knew that
the assassination which lead to it was staged.
Then the two kingdoms used their staves as their
trump cards. But doing so played right into the
scarlet princess's hands. She had anticipated
everything.

And just as she predicted, the two staves shattered
in the process.

The Scarlet Minister Ella knew everything
and made use of everything.

Her power lay in her spellbinding charm.

Just by making eye contact with someone,
she could entrance them and bring them
under her command. It is no secret that
this often resulted in the person's death.

But... Ella desired power.

With her powers of prediction, she could
catch glimpses of the future. She knew
what would eventually become of this society
controlled by greed.

In which case, she decided not to fight it.
Instead, she became a hedonist who sought to
live each moment to the fullest. To that end,
she needed the power of the two Staves.

Now, think back to that time...

Think of the scale of the sacrifices the
scarlet princess had to make.

Think of the sense of fraternity
and dignity that she sought to reinstill,
and whether that justified her course
of action.

Society's biggest strength comes from
humanity's ability to love thy neighbor.
Sometimes it means halting progress,
taking a stand, and reexamining one's path.

Tears can flow at any time, at any place.

But it is a sign.

A sign of love.

Revenge...

Despair...

Hatred...

All the dark thoughts concealed in one's
heart are eventually washed away by tears.
