Animata is a technological life form that feeds on life energy.
This life-giving energy sustains planets. As it's consumed, waste products are expelled.
Humankind refers to these waste products as fossil fuels.
In time, a sentient race known as the O'eyl emerged from the oily waste, although how and why remain a mystery.
They roam about freely, splattering oil wherever they go. While many known life forms are carbon-based, the O'eyl are composed primarily of oil.
They are thus highly flammable. A single spark can turn them into roaring pillars of flame.
Even if burnt to ashes, however, they do not die. Their consciousness lingers, drifting about the site of their remains and slowly regenerating flesh until whole again.
Viscount O'eyl is known as the primogenitor of this singular race and as a leader of proven ability.
